Before heading out to Portugal, make sure you have adequate travel and medical insurance. Policies vary depending on the provider, so take the time to check what’s actually covered — don’t just go for the cheapest option. A minor accident can quickly become expensive without the right cover.

Although it’s not a substitute for insurance, it’s a good idea to carry a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if you’re a UK resident. GHICs give you access to state healthcare in Portugal at a reduced cost, or sometimes for free. If you still have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), it will be accepted until it expires. If you fall ill while in Albufeira, there are several places where you can get medical help. For minor issues, pharmacies are well-stocked and staff are usually knowledgeable. For anything more serious, Albufeira has a number of private medical centres and clinics, such as Hospital Particular do Algarve or Clínica Particular de Albufeira. These usually offer English-speaking services but often operate privately, which is why having travel insurance is strongly recommended.

If you need police assistance while in Albufeira, there is a local police station (Polícia de Segurança Pública – PSP) located in the town centre. For non-emergency issues or to report a minor crime, you can contact the Albufeira police station on +351 289 599 899.

In case of an emergency, dial 112, which is the general emergency number used across Portugal for police, ambulance, and fire services.

Many hotels in Albufeira have their own security staff, so if you experience any issues in or around your accommodation, it’s a good idea to speak to hotel security first. They can often assist quickly or help you get in touch with local authorities if needed.

You’ll find plenty of ATMs around Albufeira, especially near The Strip and in the Old Town. Before using them, check with your bank to see what fees they charge for international withdrawals, as most ATMs in Portugal may apply a transaction fee on top of your bank’s charges.

Many clubs, bars, and restaurants in Albufeira do accept card payments, but not all — especially smaller venues or beach bars. It’s a good idea to carry a mix of cash and card to stay prepared.

Prepaid travel cards are also a smart option — you can load them with euros before your trip, helping you budget and avoid overspending. Plus, they’re safer than carrying lots of cash.
